Chronic pelvic pain is common: in women and in men. What is the cause of that pain? That often remains a mystery.
Why is that a mystery? And why is this pain so difficult to treat? It's because so many things can play a role. The pelvis, with its lower abdomen, low back, pelvic floor, buttocks, groin, upper legs and hips, is a complicated area. There are muscles, tendons, joints, nerves and organs; the bladder, for example. In women, the ovaries, uterus and vagina are located in the lower abdomen. Men have their prostate, testes and penis. If one of these organs has problems, it can affect the muscles, tendons, nerves and joints. The other way around is also possible: joint and muscle problems or nerve problems can cause organ problems. So far, we don't know what the chicken and what the egg is. What is clear, however, is that if there are complaints, both systems should be examined carefully.
There is increasing attention to scientific research on the causes, consequences and treatment options of chronic pelvic pain. But far from everything is known. That is not to say that nothing can be done about it! F-act Pelvic Pain Clinic in Enkhuizen is, as one of the few in the Netherlands, specialized in treating and remedying chronic pelvic pain complaints.
NOTE Because chronic pain can involve muscles, nerves, organs, joints, tendons and other structures in the pelvis, it is also called Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome. In English: Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CPPS). On this website, we use the term "chronic pelvic pain.
